Taormina Cable Car: How to Ride the Funivia to Mazzarò and Isola Bella

Taormina has one problem every visitor discovers on day one: the town is on a cliff, and the sea is two hundred metres below. The answer is the funivia, the little cable car that glides down the hillside from the edge of the historic centre to the Bay of Mazzarò — a few minutes of sweeping views that turn a steep, hot climb into the easiest commute in Sicily.

Here is everything you need to know about the Taormina cable car: where the stations are, how it works, when to ride, and how it links the town with the beaches of Mazzarò and Isola Bella. If you are still choosing a base, read where to stay in Taormina.

At a glance Upper station: Via Luigi Pirandello, just outside Porta Messina at the northern end of the historic centre. Lower station: on the coast road at Mazzarò, a short walk from Isola Bella. Ride time: a few minutes. Cabins run continuously, roughly every 15 minutes or more often in high season. Timetables and fares are set by the town’s public services company and change through the year — check before you go.

Where are the cable car stations?

Upper station: Taormina

The top station is on Via Luigi Pirandello, the road that curves around the northern edge of town between the bus terminal and Porta Messina, the gate at the start of Corso Umberto. From the station it is a five-minute walk to the Corso and the centre.

Lower station: Mazzarò

The bottom station sits on the coast road (Via Nazionale) at Mazzarò. Cross the road and you are at the beach. Isola Bella is a short walk south along the coast — follow the road and take the steps down to the bay.

How to ride

  • Tickets: buy single, return or day tickets at the station. Day tickets make sense if you plan to go up and down several times.
  • Frequency: small cabins depart continuously throughout the day, so you rarely wait long except at peak times.
  • Ride time: just a few minutes — enough for one of the best views on the coast.
  • Season and hours: the cable car runs year-round, with longer hours in summer, but it can close for maintenance or high winds. Always check the last cabin of the evening if you are dining in town.
  • Accessibility: both stations involve some steps or slopes nearby; if mobility is a concern, ask locally about the easiest access.
The funivia is the hinge of a Taormina holiday: beach by day, Corso Umberto by night, and never a car to park.

A perfect day with the cable car

  1. Morning: ride down early to Mazzarò and swim before the beach fills up.
  2. Late morning: walk to Isola Bella, cross the sandbar and visit the island reserve.
  3. Midday: take a boat from Mazzarò to the Grotta Azzurra and the sea caves.
  4. Afternoon: ride back up to escape the heat in the gardens of the Villa Comunale or the shade of the Teatro Antico.
  5. Evening: aperitivo on Piazza IX Aprile and dinner in town — then check the last cabin down, or take a taxi.
